The 15 Best Catholic Publishers (2024 Update!)

The following is a list of Catholic book publishers, who in this humble editor's opinion, have earned a reputation for publishing the best Catholic books that adhere to Catholic tradition and orthodoxy. These publishers collectively account for the majority of books that can be found in our marketplace. They are roughly ordered here based on their size and brand name recognition.

1. Ignatius Press

Ignatius Press
Ignatius Press is the premiere Catholic book publisher. Founded by Father Fessio who is still active in running the company, it has the largest distribution network, the largest number of customers, and makes the most amount of sales, by far. They not only sell books but also plenty of Catholic DVDs as well, especially on saints. Their mail order catalog is very beautiful, and it's always fun to delve into. They have published several books on and written by the popes, most notably, Pope Benedict XVI. Lastly, they publish Michael O'Brien, who is perhaps the most successful and popular Catholic fiction writer living today.

2. TAN Books

TAN Books
Founded in 1967, TAN Books is one of the oldest Catholic publishing companies that is still healthy and active. They publish many wonderful Catholic books, most notably, classics on spirituality by saints. They have a rock-solid reputation for orthodoxy and now have several other imprints including St. Benedict Press, and also Neumann Press, which is well-known for their children's books. They also have a very nice mail order catalog.

3. Sophia Institute Press

Sophia Institute Press
Sophia Institute Press is an up and coming Catholic publisher that is headed to the top now that they are the publishing arm of EWTN. They have a sterling reputation for orthodoxy and a large catalog of books on a variety of topics: everything from a Vatican cookbook to Mother Angelica to diaries of Chinese Catholic martyrs.

4. Angelus Press

Angelus Press
Angelus Press is THE premiere publisher of books for the SSPX. It is a sizeable organization with a very nice mail order catalog. They place a strong emphasis on traditional Catholic books that delve into topics like the Latin Mass, papal encyclicals, history, modern errors, and the current crisis of faith. A lot of hard-hitting books!

5. Tumblar House

Tumblar House
Tumblar House is a small press that publishes around 40 books, half fiction, half nonfiction. Their nonfiction is largely on history, politics, current issues, and apologetics, either written by Solange Hertz or Charles Coulombe. The centerpiece of our fiction is the Fr. Baptist series by William Biersach. They haven't published a book since 2017 though because of all the demands of their corresponding podcast and bookstore. If the owner ever gets his act together, they will publish more books.

6. Ascension Press.

Ascension Press

Most of Ascension's books are geared toward people who are looking to learn more about the Catholic Faith, most notably St. John Paul II's catechism. They have a couple of books on current issues. Some of their most prominent books are in their Amazing Grace series which offers a huge selection of inspirational stories relating to different aspects of one's life, whether it be for fatherhood, motherhood, families, survivors, or suffering.

7. Loreto Publications

Loreto Publications

Loreto sells a lot of great traditional Catholic books, most notably, Dom Gueranger's The Liturgical Year, which is one of the greatest works of Catholic writing. They publish a lot of books on a variety of categories including the Latin Mass, mariology, and books on spirituality by the saints. Highly recommended!

8. Roman Catholic Books

Roman Catholic Books

Roman Catholic Books focuses on reprinting formerly out-of-print Catholic books. They have a number of really good books including The Antichrist by Vincent P. Miceli, S.J., and A Confederacy of Evil: Cardinal Newman on the End Times by Blessed John Henry Newman. Unfortunately, they do not sell their books through big retailers like Amazon or Barnes and Noble, and they do not offer ebook versions.

9. Angelico Press

Angelico Press

Angelico Press has a good selection of books on a wide variety of topics. They publish both new books and quality out-of-print works of apologetics, theology, philosophy, political and social thought, spirituality, history, art, biography, and literature. As stated on their website, they are "dedicated to making the rich tradition of Catholic intellectual and cultural life more available to families, students, and scholars."

10. Mediatrix Press

Mediatrix Press

Mediatrix Press publishes several books on St. Robert Bellarmine, who is perhaps one of the most underappreciated saints ever. They also publish books on other saints including St. Dominic, St. Philip Neri, St. Peter Canisius, St. John Vianney, and St. Alphonsus Liguori.

11. Sensus Traditionis

Sensus Traditionis

Sensus Traditionis publishes books by Fr. Chad Ripperger. You've listened to his sermons, now read his books! He's written on several important topics including The Metaphysics of Evolution, Magisterial Authority, and an Introduction to the Science of Mental Health. The best-selling book by far is Deliverance Prayers: For Use By The Laity which has many prayers that I haven't found anywhere else on the internet. These prayers heavily focus on exorcising diabolic influence, whether it be possession, obsession, oppression, or simply temptation.

12. Baronius Press

Baronius Press

Baronius Press takes essential books, like Fundamentals of Catholic Dogma, the Catechism of the Council of Trent, and classic spiritual writings of the saints, and they beautifully highlight them by publishing gorgeous versions of these titles. In recent years, the Catechism of Trent has become incredibly popular due to the strange amendments that the current hierarchy have been making to the Catechism of the Catholic Church. Also, Baronius Press literally has 12 different versions of the Douay Rheims Bible! Now that's hardcore trad!

13. Cluny Media

Cluny Media

Cluny Media has done a tremendous service to the Catholic community by republishing many of Etienne Gilson's books which had been out of print for a long time. Truth be told, I personally had been waiting for years for these books to be republished, and I am quite excited that they're finally back! Cluny focuses exclusively on republishing old, forgotten titles, but these titles have been forgotten for all the wrong reasons. They really carry a lot of fascinating books that I've never seen before which I've put on my reading list.

13. Arouca Press

Arouca PressArouca Press has really impressed lately, publishing books authored by many big name traditionalists including John Rao, Michael Davies, Fr. Thomas Crean, Dr. Peter Kwasniewski, Etienne Gilson, and Thomas Storck. To give you an idea of the types of books they publish, here are a few that are especially interesting: Foundations of a Catholic Political Order, The Church Speaks to the Modern World: The Social Teachings of Leo XIII, Liberalism: A Critique of Its Basic Principles, Catholic Christendom versus Revolutionary Disorder, The Science of Sacred Theology, Either Catholicism or Liberalism.

13. The Cenacle Press at Silverstream Priory

Cenacle PressCenacle Press is run by Benedictine monks in Ireland. They have only very recently begun publishing old reprints of Catholics, but they are off the a very quick start. Two of the monks who they publish a lot of are Blessed Columba Marmion and Dom Hubert Van Zeller who both have a lot of interesting titles on spirituality.
