Book Summary:

Chiara Petrillo was seated in a wheel chair looking lovingly toward Jesus in the tabernacle. Her husband, Enrico, found the courage to ask her a question that he had been holding back. Thinking of Jesus's phrase, my yoke is sweet and my burden is light, he asked: "Is this yoke, this cross, really sweet, as Jesus said?"

A smile came across Chiara's face. She turned to her husband and said in a weak voice: "Yes, Enrico, it is very sweet."

At 28 years old, Chiara passed away, her body ravaged by cancer. The emotional, physical, and spiritual trials of this young Italian mother are not uncommon. It was her joyful and loving response to each that led one cardinal to call her a saint for our times.

Chiara entrusted her first baby to the blessed Virgin, but felt as though this child was not hers to keep. Soon, it was revealed her daughter had life-threatening abnormalities. Despite universal pressure to abort, Chiara gave birth to a beautiful girl who died within the hour. A year later, the death of her second child came even more quickly.

Yet God was preparing their hearts for more more sorrow and more grace.

While pregnant a third time, Chiara developed a malignant tumor, but refused the treatment that would save her treatment that would have risked the life of her unborn son.

Almost immediately after giving birth to Francesco, Chiara's tumor became terminal and caused her to lose the use of her right eye. Her body was tested, and so was her soul as she suffered through terrible dark nights.

She said yes to everything God sent her way, becoming a true child of God. And as her days on earth came to an end, Enrico looked down on his wife and said, "If she is going to be with Someone who loves her more than I, why should I be upset?"

Each saint has a special charisma, a particular facet of God that is reflected through her. Chiara's was to be a witness to joy in the face of great adversity, the kind which makes love overflow despite the sorrow from loss and death.

5 Stars A book for all.

I bought and read the book because I thought it might change my life. I bought it for my daughter for the same reason. One thing that can change for me is to appreciate more how I've been blest in this life and that's what I'm hoping my 40 yr old daughter will take away. The book, to me, is not an anti-abortion preaching platform. But, to me, it makes the most powerful pro-life statement possible. I thought sometime later after finishing it that many millions of women have shared Chiara's pregnancy experiences, esp. before the advent of the ultrasound machine. But for her to carry on (her crosses) in this day and age is more than remarkable. Recommended for everyone. If this 77 yr old dog can benefit from it, anyone can. God bless all child bearing women

5 Stars Life-changing!

Perhaps the most inspiring story I've ever read! This book contains a love story that quickens the human heart and reminds us of the true beauty of life-giving love within a family. Chiara and Enrico's story helps us to chose sacrifice over selfishness and life over death. I highly recommend this book for all readers.

5 Stars A Witness To Joy helps one reevaluate!
on February 9, 2016
Unbelievably precious! It's very difficult to find appropriate words. The story should be sad, and, in some ways, it is. But it is magnificent that real flesh and blood people, young people at that, actually live "joy". Joy in the lives they've been given, joy in the challenges (overwhelming for most of us) they faced, joy in one another. I cannot recommend it highly enough!

What a touching story of a family that really desired to live out the will of God. Really easy read while still being very inspiring. The ending was especially inspiring for me as a young Catholic woman seeking to know God through suffering. Highly recommend!

5 Stars We are born into eternity, and we shall never die

An inspiring biography about Chiara Petrillo and her husband Enrico. The couple lost two children both within a hour after birth because of genetic issues for which they chose not to abort. They then conceived a third, healthy child. During this pregnancy Chiara herself was diagnosed with cancer, but chose to await treatment because of the possible impact of treatment on the child in her womb. The biography reflects their journey of faith in God, their love for the Blessed Mother, and the support of family and friends. They trusted and lived that "We are born into eternity, and we shall never die." There were struggles, of course, but they kept their hearts fixed on Jesus and experienced joy beyond imagination. Skeptics may remain skeptical; but for those seeking to walk with Jesus, the book is a witness to his faithfulness. In believing, they came to understand and to take courage in what God revealed to them, however dimly that can be for us, as if in a mirror.
