Spiritual Combat - Required Reading especially in today's climate

I picked this up on the recommendation of a close friend when I finally got serious about living the Catholic Faith. It is a no-holds-barred approach on how to battle the conflict and evils of the outside world. Dom Lorenzo Scupoli lays it all out in this book. He was an apprentice to Saint Andrew Avellino and a contemporary of Saint Francis de Sales (he even gave him a copy!) I highly recommend The Spiritual Combat and A Treatise on Peace of Soul and wish that I had read it in my early 20's.

Essential Combat

If one were to have only a handful of books- this should be in the collection. Like Bergamo’s Humility of Heart, Spiritual Combat pulls no punches and the reader ends up reading into himself and recognizing his deep inner pride and the devil’s toehold on it. Moreover, it gives the practical advice how to engage the demon and our vices and grow in virtue in an ordered, direct manner. Most of us have read enough about our enemies; this is a manual that teaches us how to actually fight them. Ave Maria.
