Book Summary:

Americanism is a heresy which five different popes have condemned. But what is it? Perhaps the best characterization of Americanism was given by Leo XIII's biographer Msgr. T'Serclaes: "A spirit of independence which passed too easily from the political to the religious sphere."

"That the Church and State ought to be separated is an absolutely false and pernicious error ... It limits the action of the State exclusively to the pursuit of public prosperity during this life, though this is only the proximate raison d'etre of political societies." - Pope St. Pius X in Vehementer

"It is unlawful to follow one line of conduct in private life and another in public, respecting privately the authority of the Church, but publicly rejecting it; for this would amount to joining together good and evil, and to putting man in conflict with himself; whereas he ought always to be consistent, and never in the least point not in any condition of life to swerve from Christian virtue." - Leo XIII in Immortale Dei

"Believe me, the evil I denounce is more terrible than the Revolution, more terrible even than the Commune. I have always condemned liberal Catholicism, and I will condemn it forty times over if it be necessary!" - Pius IX

About the Author:

An established writer before the Second Vatican Council, Solange Hertz wrote for most Catholic periodicals and had five books to her credit, one a selection of the Catholic Literary Foundation. When she refused to adjust her theology to the new "Spirit of Vatican II," her manuscripts almost overnight became unacceptable to her former editors. After a series of articles on feminine spiritual for the old Triumph magazine, she continued speaking for tradition by successfully producing on her own, The Thought of His Heart, and Sin Revisited. In 1973 she began writing the Big Rock Papers, published privately throughout the next decade and the source of the highly acclaimed Star Spangled Heresy: Americanism, published in 1992. Currently her articles can be found in The Remnant, and abroad in Apropos, Christian Order and Action Familiale et Scolaire. Mrs. Hertz is universally regarded as one of traditional Catholicism's foremost contemporary writers and lecturers.

A heresy that is overlooked
S. Cunningham on June 30, 2015
Excellent book. Short and to the point. I was amazed, but not shocked, at how the 1700s and 1800s were and proves that we shouldn't put all the blame on the second Vatican council as the problem was long before it as Pius IX, Pius X, et al were writing and warning against it.
Good overview of the heresy of Americanism
R. L. Hume on July 13, 2015
Good summation of the fact that the heresy of Americanism is real, not the "non-existant" heresy some claim it is. This book hits all the important details and people involved. I'm looking for a more detailed treatment now that I've read this. Seems like when Vatican II rolled around Americanism merged with Modernism leading to the turmoil in the Church we've had since then.
Think America is a Christian nation?? Think again!
P W Trimmer on June 20, 2005
This is an excellent book, easy to read, that makes a valid arguement that our system of government is heretical (against the teachings of scripture and Christian tradition) and the men who conceived of it had as their goal the destruction of Christian, western culture. This book was written several years ago, but time has proven Ms. Hertz theory to be a persuasive one. The paganization of America and the collapse of the Roman Catholic Church make sense in the light of her hypothesis. This book is out of print, probably because it attacks the status quo to it's core. Get one while you can.
