Saint Alphonsus de Liguori (1696–1787), Doctor of the Church, was a legal prodigy who earned a double doctorate at the age of sixteen. Born into a noble Italian family, he abandoned his legal career to serve the poor and sick of Naples. In 1732, he founded the Congregation of the Most Holy Redeemer, the Redemptorists, dedicating his life to preaching missions and guiding souls.

Remarkably, his literary career did not begin until he was nearly fifty. From then on, he wrote tirelessly, producing 111 works touching on apologetics, ecclesiastical discipline, dogmatic theology, ascetical theology, and most famously moral theology. This volume presents selections from many of his writings in a “thought-a-day” format, offering readers both spiritual nourishment and practical wisdom.
